1. Strategic Statement
International Business School (IBS) is committed to delivering high‑quality, inclusive and applied learning experiences that enable students to succeed academically, professionally and personally. This Teaching and Learning Strategy sets out IBS’s strategic approach to learning, teaching and assessment and articulates how this contributes to positive student outcomes, academic standards and institutional sustainability.
The Strategy aligns with IBS’s mission to widen participation, support diverse and mature learners, and deliver education that is relevant to professional practice and societal needs. It fulfills expectations under the Office for Students (OfS) regulatory framework by embedding quality, student engagement and continuous enhancement at the heart of academic provision.
2. Purpose
The purpose of this Strategy is to:
- Articulate IBS’s vision and priorities for teaching and learning
- Support consistent, high‑quality educational practice across programmes
- Promote inclusive, accessible and research‑informed learning
- Align learning and teaching with employability, entrepreneurship and lifelong learning
- Provide a framework for continuous enhancement and staff development
3. Scope
This Strategy applies to:
- All taught programmes delivered by IBS
- All academic staff involved in learning, teaching and assessment
- Learning delivered on‑campus, through blended approaches, or supported digitally
4. Educational Philosophy
IBS’s approach to teaching and learning is underpinned by the following principles:
- Student‑centred learning: Teaching is designed around the needs, experiences and aspirations of a diverse student population
- Inclusivity and accessibility: Learning environments are inclusive by design, supporting students with different backgrounds and circumstances
- Applied and career‑relevant education: Learning connects theory with practice and prepares students for graduate‑level employment and entrepreneurship
- Academic integrity and standards: Teaching and assessment promote rigorous academic standards and ethical practice
- Partnership: Students are active partners in shaping their learning experience
5. Learning, Teaching and Assessment Approach
IBS promotes teaching practices that:
- Use varied and inclusive pedagogies to engage all learners
- Integrate formative and summative assessment aligned to learning outcomes
- Provide timely, meaningful feedback to support progression
- Encourage critical thinking, reflection and independent learning
- Embed effective and ethical use of digital tools, including Generative AI, where appropriate
Assessment practices are governed by the Assessment and Feedback Policy and support fairness, transparency and validity.
6. Supporting Student Engagement and Success
IBS is committed to:
- Monitoring student engagement and progression data
- Early identification of students who may be at risk of disengagement
- Providing academic, pastoral and careers‑related support
- Using student feedback to improve teaching and learning
These measures support compliance with OfS expectations on continuation, completion and achievement.
7. Staff Development and Professional Practice
IBS supports high‑quality teaching through:

- Teaching observation and peer‑enhancement processes
- Scholarship in teaching, learning and assessment

- The Virtual Learning Environment supports effective learning
- Library and academic skills provision are embedded within curricula
- Digital tools enhance engagement without creating barriers
9. Quality Assurance and Enhancement
The Strategy is implemented through:
- Annual programme monitoring and review
- Curriculum review and enhancement processes
- External examiner reporting and response
- Governance oversight through Academic Board
Continuous enhancement is evidence‑based and responsive to student and sector needs.
10. Monitoring and Review
Progress against this Strategy will be monitored through:
- Student outcomes and satisfaction data
- Teaching quality indicators
- Review of enhancement activity
This Strategy will be reviewed every two years, or earlier if required by regulatory change.
