1. Policy Statement

International Business School (IBS) is committed to providing and maintaining a safe, healthy and supportive environment for students, staff, visitors and contractors. IBS recognises that health, safety and wellbeing are fundamental to effective learning, teaching and academic engagement, and are integral to meeting its responsibilities as a higher education provider.

IBS takes a proactive and proportionate approach to health and safety management, ensuring that risks are identified, assessed and controlled, and that reasonable steps are taken to prevent accidents, injuries and ill health. This policy supports IBS’s obligations under health and safety legislation and the Office for Students (OfS) regulatory framework, including student protection and institutional risk management.


2. Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to:

  • Provide a clear framework for managing health and safety at IBS
  • Ensure compliance with relevant health and safety legislation
  • Promote a positive health and safety culture across IBS
  • Clarify responsibilities of staff, students and other stakeholders
  • Support student wellbeing, protection and positive outcomes

3. Scope

This policy applies to:

  • All IBS students, staff, contractors and visitors
  • All IBS premises, activities and learning environments
  • Academic, administrative and support activities, including excursions and events

This policy applies equally to on‑site and off‑site activities where IBS has responsibility or control.


4. Definitions

  • Health and Safety: Measures to protect individuals from harm arising from activities, environments or equipment.
  • Risk Assessment: A systematic process of identifying hazards, evaluating risks and implementing control measures.
  • Hazard: Anything with the potential to cause harm.

5. Responsibilities

5.1 IBS Responsibilities

IBS will:

  • Comply with all applicable health and safety legislation
  • Provide safe premises, systems of work and learning environments
  • Conduct and review risk assessments regularly
  • Provide information, instruction and training where required
  • Monitor health and safety performance and incidents

5.2 Staff Responsibilities

Staff are expected to:

  • Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others
  • Follow IBS health and safety procedures and guidance
  • Report hazards, incidents and near misses promptly
  • Cooperate with risk assessments, training and investigations

5.3 Student Responsibilities

Students are expected to:

  • Take responsibility for their own health and safety and that of others
  • Follow health and safety instructions and guidance provided by IBS
  • Behave responsibly while on IBS premises or activities
  • Report hazards, incidents or concerns promptly

5.4 Contractors and Visitors

Contractors and visitors must:

  • Comply with IBS health and safety arrangements while on site
  • Follow instructions provided by IBS staff
  • Report any hazards or incidents they observe

6. Risk Management and Safe Systems of Work

IBS operates a systematic approach to health and safety risk management, including:

  • Identification of hazards and completion of risk assessments
  • Implementation of control measures and safe systems of work
  • Emergency procedures, including fire safety and evacuation
  • Ongoing monitoring and review of risk controls

7. Training, Information and Communication

IBS will:

  • Provide appropriate health and safety information and training
  • Ensure staff and students understand relevant procedures
  • Promote awareness of health and safety responsibilities
  • Encourage open communication and consultation on health and safety matters

8. Incident Reporting and Investigation

All accidents, incidents, near misses and cases of work‑related ill health must be reported in accordance with IBS procedures. IBS will:

  • Record and investigate reported incidents
  • Take appropriate corrective and preventative action
  • Comply with statutory reporting requirements, including RIDDOR where applicable

9. Monitoring and Review

IBS monitors health and safety performance through:

  • Incident and accident reporting
  • Inspections and audits
  • Review of risk assessments
  • Student and staff feedback

This policy will be reviewed annually or earlier if required due to legislative, organisational or operational changes.


10. Data Protection

Any personal data processed under this policy will be handled in accordance with the IBS Data Protection Policy and applicable data protection legislation.
